You don’t need to have a million dollars to look like a million dollars. With a few smart decisions. You can easily look the part.
Number One – Make a statement with tasteful statement pieces.
Now that you’ve toned down your outfit, dress it up with some tasteful statement pieces. This might be a bold necklace, a pocket-handkerchief, some show stopper earrings, a great handbag, or perhaps some red shoes or a beret. This is where you add glam and expression to your outfit that allows people to get some insight into your personality. We are to spend on a few key items that show wealth rather than cheap bling. Even Michael’s chorus agrees; he says, “I’ve always thought of accessories as the exclamation point of a woman’s outfit.” So, don’t let him down and wear a tasteful statement piece.
Number Two – Look after the skin you are in.
Don’t believe the hype; 40 is not the new 30 when it comes to your skin’s age. All the makeup in the world can’t hide flaws and wrinkles, so look after your skin with a great cleansing and exfoliating routine and a good moisturizing regimen too. The wealthy know that before dressing up, your skin needs to glow. That means preventing razor patches, avoiding the sun, and treating acne that can all leave permanent marks on your skin. Dermatologists will tell you a good daily skin routine is worth more than any deep tissue treatment or skin peel the professional spas will offer. So, don’t skim on your skin and you’ll always look like a million bucks, no matter what you’re wearing.
Number Three – Material differences.
Not all fabrics are equal. Some ooze opulence while others make you look cheap, no matter how well they fit. The wealthy steer toward natural fibers, cotton, silk, and wool, just speak of volumes of class. Polyester, nylon, and rayon might be where and go, but they smack of a discount design. You won’t find these fabrics in the wardrobes of the rich. There are other reasons why purchasing the right fabric is the better option. It just feels better on your skin. So not only will you look richer, you’ll feel richer too. Your clothing won’t fall to pieces after a few washes, and you won’t need to be worried that you’re going to show pit stains when you get a bit sweaty.
Number Four – Tailor your clothes.
Never underestimate the importance of great tailoring. You should be wearing your clothes, not your clothes wearing you. This is a case of a bad fit. Build up a relationship with a local tailor who can resize anything you buy to look as if it were made just for you.
Number Five – Black will always be the new black.
We aren’t sure if it was Coco Chanel or nuns who first made us aware of the versatility of a solid black outfit. But either way, it’s a top go-to for the rich. Forget trying to coordinate a wardrobe of every color. Cut back to a few classy black pieces, and you will always look chic and well put together for any occasion. Don’t worry, you won’t come across like Morticia Adams; add some pop to your black canvas with statement pieces, but more on that in just a bit. Black is a color of power and it demands to be noticed. It makes a statement and shows refinement and elegance more than any other color. It always gives pause to noise and clutter and allows your natural features like eyes, cheekbones, and hair to stand out. Eve Sandler all sums it up perfectly; “I love black because it affirms, designs and styles. A woman in a black dress is a pencil stroke.”
Number Six – The devils in the details.
Develop an eye for detail. Take a look at the rich and styled and see what sets their style apart. It’s often in the details. Some tastefully chosen cufflinks or well-polished shoes, a neatly ironed tie, or a matching earring and bracelet set. Nothing beats a well-pressed dress or blazer, and no one can deny the appeal of a freshly laundered shirt. Make sure to follow the care instructions on the label. This is a surefire way to make sure your clothes last longer and stay in good shape. If you’re going to invest money in your wardrobe, best take care of it. And don’t forget to store your clothes well and look after your shoes; scuff marks on your shoes are definitely not going to exude wealth.
Number seven – Get quality leather goods.
Little says luxury like leather. If you want to roll with the rich and famous, invest in some leather items to add to your wardrobe. Leather shoes might seem expensive upfront, but look after them and they’ll outlast 10 pairs of pleather shoes. The same rule can be applied to bags and wallets. Choose styles that have classic lines and are free from any seasonal fads, and you’ll be able to keep them for years, all the while they become more classy looking as they age, which is the opposite of foe-leather items.
Number eight – Ditch the logos.
If you want to blend in with the rich, you might have to reconsider the role that logos play in your wardrobe. You won’t often find someone worth billions, sporting, a chess full of free publicity while playing golf. They opt for brands with a more subtle and refined approach to how their brand is recognized rather than a garnish logo plastered all over the wearer. Not only are you selling yourself short by spending $300 on a t-shirt that turns you into a walking billboard for the brand, but it’s also tacky to try so hard to show off brands. Instead of going with high street brands, seek some local up-and-coming brands with the kind of style and sophistication you’ll also find in big name luxury. Usually, newer brands will be more affordable, but still, make you look like solid gold. And if you need some inspiration on up and coming designers; start with accessories from these young designers.
Number Nine – shoulder, a structured back.
Instead of a sloppy hold; opt for a structured bag to complete your finished look, whether you need a handbag, satchel, or laptop bag, look for a bag that has some bones to it. Not only will it keep its contents in a better shape, but it’ll also mean less fishing around in a melting pot of keys, loose change, sunglasses, and lipstick when you need to find something. A structured bag completes your expensive look, hand cuts through the clutter, showing that you mean business.
Number 10 – wear sunglasses.
Can you remember the last time you saw a celebrity pictured by the paparazzi grabbing a smoothie without Sunny’s on? I bet you can’t. Not only do sunglasses, give us a sense of privacy; they also create an undeniable air of elegance and mystery. Even if you don’t feel cool, the right pair of eyewear will make you look cooler than Selena Gomez and her favorite cat-eye shades. Invest in a good pair that offers both eye protection and a boatload of status. If this from Jack Nicholson, doesn’t cement it, then we don’t know what will. He says, “With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson, without them, I’m fat and 60.”
Number 11 – grooming matters.
And grooming matters. Get a great haircut, one that doesn’t require a stylist every day to look good. Be reminded of our first point when we highlighted how important it is to look after our skin, and keep your nails looking neat and trimmed. No raggedy edges or hooks, and definitely no dirt underneath your fingernails. Sad to say, but we are judged on our first appearance. And one of our signature pieces is our hair. Do you remember the story of Anna Delve? Her real name is Anna Vadimovna Sorokina, and she pretended to be a rich socialite and conned a few people in New York City out of a decent sum of money. She’s originally from Russia, grew up in Germany, and later immigrated to New York. According to reports, one of the pieces of evidence that gave away her alter ego was her hair. It wasn’t quite the hair of an elite socialite and is currently in prison. What’s more? Shonda Rhimes is produced a Netflix series all about this famous fraudster.
Number 12 – Get a quality watch.
A watch is a timeless piece, one that adds the extra touch of class to any outfit. A cheap knockoff or badly designed watch will just scream poor, and that’s not you. Your watch should reflect your style. Plus, they should make you look more successful. Save up and invest in a good quality timepiece. One that will gain value and one that will make all of those you meet, believe you’re doing well on the income front. Besides, it looks kind of tacky to get your mobile phone out every time you need to check the clock.
Number 13 – have a home bar.
You finally reached a certain stage in your life where you have your own home bar. We’re not speaking about a few pallets, stuck together in a couple of cold ones in a mini-fridge behind it. And we’re not talking about a proper bar with wooden tops, overhead lights, and coasters. What really makes you look rich and doesn’t cost a fortune is simply having a classy selection of alcohol. Take it one step further and decant the whiskey for example, into a decanter, or a beautiful bottle of your choice and have the right glasses to enjoy the whiskey from. Nothing says I’m not quite an adult yet like drinking whiskey from plastic cups or wine from a coffee mug. These additions won’t cost a fortune and can drastically change the way people perceive you.
Number 14 – get your teeth fixed.
As Dr. Sue said, teeth are always in style. Like our hair, people notice our teeth quickly. If they’re in bad shape, it’ll only be a matter of seconds before we’re standing alone breathing into a cup of our hand, inhaling our breath, and wondering if it’s bad. Don’t let that happen to you. If your teeth are less than great, get them sorted out. Yes, there will be an initial expense, but the long-term benefits are definitely worth it.
Number 15 – Stay informed with current events.
It’s simple – educated people always appear wealthier and gaining knowledge these days is easy.
